West Thumb Geyser Basin in Yellowstone National Park

One of the smallest and quietest basins, mostly hot springs and pools. There is a walkway throughout the area so it is a good place to see these features close up.

Surging Spring
At the high point of the cycle, the water is overflowing a little. You can see a little boiling in the water.

Collapsing Pool (edge)
The ledge of rock on the side of this pool has partialy collapsed, giving it its name.

Ephedra Spring
Greenish-yellow on the edge and greenish-blue in the center. This is a small pool that isn't overflowing.

Black Pool
Named black pool, but it is blue and giving off a good amount of steam. People look at it from the boardwalk on the left.

Where is the flow is the strongest and hottest it is bright orange. It goes into Lake Yellowstone.

Percolating Spring
This spring bubbles along all day. It is shallow and clear so the white ground shows through. Along the edge is a ring of yellow and orange bacteria.
