Delicate Arch

Delicate arch is the most photographed arch. It is the one on Utah's license plate and is probably the most recognized one. There are two places to see it, first, at Delicate Arch viewpoint. This is a short, fairly easy hike, but you don't get very close to the arch. The other way is to take a 1.5 mile hike over slick rock. This lets you get right up to the base of the arch.

Sunset is the best time to see the arch, and one of the most popular times as well. When I was there, there were probably 50 other people sitting along the side of the rocks to watch sunset and take pictures. Fortunately, they were all very considerate and tried to stay out of the way of other peoples photos. At sunset, the rock lights up with an orangish glow. After sunset, you have to make the mile and a half trek back to your car and it will get dark before you get back, so bring a flashlight.

Delicate Arch, late sunset
The sun has set, but still lights up the clouds in the distance, giving the arch a soft glow. This is the end of the show, the only thing left to do is pack up your stuff and start the hike back.
